Fake Beards and Mustaches- Get some facial hair for your costume!
Have you ever wondered to yourself, where do beards and mustache come from? They have migrated throughout the ages, all the way back from prehistoric times. They have typically served as more than mere fashion symbols. Mustaches and beards have frequently been regarded as symbols of clout, authority, and they have even served religious purposes in a variety of world religions.
Conversely, fake beards and mustaches have served a far more sinister and humorous roles among men throughout history. For example, they often functioned as disguises in order to hide the identities of the illicit. In more benign cases, fakes beards and mustaches are word for comedic purposes at costume parties, or during theatrical performances. Apparently, the role of beards and mustaches have played a far more eclectic role in human history than initially conceived.
First, let’s examine the complex history of the beard. Upon first glance, it appears as though its mere purpose is to insulate a man’s chin, or to hide an unsightly double chin or undefined jawline. However, its history is far more noteworthy than this. This lower facial hair dominated the ancient and classical world, emerging in Ancient Greece, Ancient Iran, Ancient India, Ancient Macedon, Ancient Rome, and also among Celtic and Germanic tribes. This is no surprise. as facial hair is a natural occurrence for men.
Beards served a significant purpose in religions, such as Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism. According to some religious practices, the beard is holy and shaving is strictly forbidden. In such cultures, the beard serves as a symbol of holiness and spiritual dedication.
Interestingly, specific professions and lifestyles strictly prohibit beards. For example, the military and certain sports have always advocated a clean-shaven appearance, with absolutely no exceptions. It is believed that a beard would interfere with one’s speed or performance. Many work environments forbid the growth of a beard of any capacity.
Untamed beards are generally taboo, unless they are worn for religious purposes, or routinely trimmed and groomed. This is ironic, considering that the most notable Kings and make figures in history have worn beards. In fact, it was a sign of status in Ancient Egypt and a variety of other societies.
The mustache has been a prevailing status symbol, among celebrities, comedians, world leaders, and of course, evil dictators. Specific mustaches communicate specific things. For example, a handlebar mustache gives rise to a more western appeal. Whereas, a thinly trimmed mustache is avant garde and European. In American society, the mustache is often paired with stubble or additional facial hair. In certain professions, such as that of the police force, mustaches are common.
So, why on the green earth would you ever need a fake beard or mustache? Primarily for Halloween or costume parties. Fake beards and mustaches are appropriate for a variety of costumes, including a cop costume, and wild west outfit, a philosopher, and much more. However, it is not recommended that a fake beard or mustache be worn for everyday wear.
